In Cairo, President Obama unleashed the ultimate weapon of mass destruction. No bombs, no guns, no bullets, no soldiers. There is nothing like the power of an idea fired at an ideological enemy. With one speech he has sown the seeds of destruction for extremism, and has begun the process of marginalizing the right wing Muslim (Al Qaeda, Taliban), Christian (neo conservatives) and Jewish (Benjamin Netanyahu) extremists without firing a shot. It was brilliant and stunning politics.
This kind of diplomatic offensive to win hearts and minds is the best weapon available to the United States to fight terrorism and win friends and allies. It spreads like wildfire, from mind to mind, smothers the capacity of terrorists to recruit, creates friends of potential enemies, and exposes right wing media critics like Rush Limbaugh, Fox's O'Reilly and Shaun Hannity as divisive, unpatriotic and anti-American. Their messages of villification run counter to the American constitution, and do not help their country, nor the fight against terrorism.
Unlike the battle on the field, the battle for the mind is cost effective. There is no negative impact on the budget and burgeoning United States deficit. Quite the opposite.
